Craig Monroe Sucks
Dan Lewis · 28 June 06

I’ve had enough.

So far today, Monroe has grounded into a double play (right after a single and right before a double), and he’s struck out with the bases loaded.

It is time for the Tigers to wake up to the fact that Craig Monroe is not a good baseball player. He has been in Detroit for a while, and thus many of the fans seem to think he used to be good and that the real Craig Monroe is coming back soon.

This is the real Craig Monroe. He has never been a good player. He’s a little better, historically, than he’s been this year, but not much, and his performance is not totally out of line with what he’s done every year, year in and year out. He’s 29 years old, he’s had nearly 1900 plate appearances, and he’s put together this line:

AVG/OBP/SLG
.263/.307/.450

This year it’s:

AVG/OBP/SLG
.237/.274/.432

When will the real Craig Monroe return?!

He’s not a particularly good defensive player, he doesn’t draw walks (about 1 every 17 plate appearances), he grounds into double plays, he is clueless and planless at the plate, and he doesn’t hit anywhere near enough homers to make up for all of this. I’m tired of him being in the lineup.

There is a lot of talk in Detroit that the Tigers desperately need a left-handed bat. That would be nice, but what we really need is a good bat, period, left-handed or right-handed. Getting hung up on the which batter’s box the guy stands in is a mistake, and it’s how you end up with Matt Stairs instead of Craig Wilson or Carlos Lee.

Update:

In his 6th inning at bat, Monroe bunt singled for an RBI. At least he is self-aware. As of press time he still sucks.

  1. There is a report that the Yankees have called the tigers about Monroe. I say trade him off for a satchel of baseballs and a baker’s dozen of new york bagels.

  2. But make sure they’re H&H, and get them to toss in a coupla schmears. Don’t settle for anything less.

  3. You forgot to mention how great he is at stealing. Not bases, but belts. Though, I guess the fact he got caught just proves he isn’t good at that either.

  4. Yes, you’re referring to the $30 belt that Monroe, apparently a kleptomaniac, tried to lift from a Florida department store.

I don’t generally care whether or not our players are good people, but unfortunately Monroe shows the same disdain for the strike zone that he shows for paying retail prices.
