Detroit Tigers Pep Rally
Dan Lewis · 25 October 06

Now that the Tigers are down 2-1 and stuck in St. Louis for the next few days, I figure it’s time to break out the Detroit Zoo pep rally photos. They aren’t the best pictures for the purpose of chronicling the event, the staged mauling of a Cardnials jersey mockup by a real life tiger, but at least it’s evidence that I didn’t make this up. Either way, we need all the good mojo we can get.

When I heard about this pep rally, I imagined a tiger being let loose to claw and devour a piñata stuffed not only with raw meat, but with blood red feathers that would comically fly everywhere during the dynamic carnage.

In reality, the “jersey” was nothing more than a painted box, and the tigers (there were two) were more playful than voracious. Fortunately for the crowd, a full sized tiger tears to pieces whatever it has decided to play with, so the thing went off fairly well.

I couldn’t get really close to the action, obviously, as there were too many zoo employees around for me to jump the mote and get some candid closeups. If I can figure out how to post it, the video, which is much better, will be forthcoming, complete with “Let’s go Tigers, let’s go!” chanting from whichever school kids were lucky enough to be on a field trip that day. On the video, during the mauling, is this exchange:

My friend Kevin and I: (laughing)

Some guy: (Seriously) So you think this is a good sign?

Kevin: This is a good sign.

Me: This is a great sign.

A “Detroit” Tiger. We have a cool mascot.

St. Louis Cardinals box/jersey, minding its own business.
